HOST AN ADVOCACY EVENT!

Pastries & Postcards

    • Location- A local coffee shop or community hall

    • Time- 1.5-2 hours

    • Budget $0-$5 per attendee

    • Materials Needed:

      • Postcards (provided by A.L.L.)

      • Pens, markers, and stickers for customization.

      • Address lists and sample messages for legislators or friends.

      • Light refreshments like pastries, coffee, tea, or hot cocoa 

      • Sign up sheet to collect names, phone numbers, and email address for all attendees

    • Engagement Activities:

      • Start with a 5-minute overview of the advocacy goals.

      • Provide a writing station with templates and talking points to make it easy to get started.

      • Play soft music or encourage participants to share stories while they write.

    • Community Building Component:

      • Offer a gratitude exercise: ask participants to write a short note about what they’re thankful for in their community and contribute to a group bucket to be shared out.

    1. Location

      • Reserve a space at a local coffee shop, community hall, or other free space.

      • Confirm the space has tables and chairs for writing.

    2. Materials Preparation

      • Request postcards from A.L.L. (Advocacy Letter Link).

      • Request sample messaging and from A.L.L.

      • Purchase pastries from the coffee shop and/or a local store (or make your own if the space allowed). Arrange for attendees

    3. Event Setup

      • Create a cozy atmosphere with any tablecloths, resource materials, stickers, or other items you have on hand.

      • Set up a writing station with materials and a sample postcard as a guide.

      • Play soft background music to create a welcoming environment (if not already provided by the venue)

    4. During the Event

      • Welcome Participants: Begin with a 5-minute overview of the advocacy goals.

      • Engage: Guide participants to write postcards using the templates provided.

      • Share: Encourage attendees to share their stories or advocacy reasons while they write with other folks at their tables.

      • Community Building Activity: Host a gratitude exercise: participants write what they’re thankful for in their community and contribute to a "gratitude bucket."

    5. Wrap-Up

      • Collect completed postcards to mail.

      • Pull a few items from the gratitude bucket and read them to the group.

      • Thank participants and invite them to the next event.

      • Encourage participants to bring their phones and text friends using a pre-written template.

      • Set a fun goal, like sending 20 texts each, and celebrate milestones together.

    • Community Building Component:

      • After the text-banking activity, host a 15-minute "Story Circle" to encourage participants to share personal stories about what motivates them to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.

      • Reserve a space at a coffee shop, arrange a host home, or find another free space in your community.

      • Confirm the space has tables and chairs for writing.

      • Prepare a script or example text message for attendees.

      • If at a host home provide tea bags, coffee, sugar, milk, cups, hot water, if at a local coffee shop arrange with the barista a tab for attendees within your budget (perhaps covering the first 10 attendees or covering just black coffee and teas, etc.)

    3. Event Setup

      • If at a host home arrange a tea/coffee station with all supplies.

      • Create a seating arrangement conducive to conversation and collaboration.

      • Provide sample text in a place where all attendees can see it.

    4. During the Event

      • Welcome Participants: Start with a brief overview of the legislative goals and a quick demo on text banking.

      • Engage: Encourage attendees to use pre-written templates to text friends about legislation or events.

      • Celebrate: Set a goal (e.g., 20 texts per person) and celebrate milestones with cheers or small prizes.

      • Community Building Activity: Host a 15-minute "Story Circle" after text banking. Ask participants to share personal stories about why they care about LGBTQ+ advocacy.

    5. Wrap-Up

      • Thank participants and share updates about the impact of their texts.

      • Provide information about upcoming advocacy opportunities.

    • Advocacy cheat sheet (current bills and messaging).

    • LGBTQ+ book list with categories for all ages (fiction, memoir, history).

    • Engagement Activities:
      Advocacy Postcard Writing:

      • Provide postcards, pens, and a list of legislators or local recipients.

      • Offer templates with talking points on current LGBTQ+ issues or bills.

      • Encourage participants to share their reasons for writing postcards, fostering a sense of community purpose.

    • Community Building Component: Book Browsing & Check-Out:

      • Encourage participants to get a library card. Ask a librarian to talk to the group about resources the library offers (audiobooks, makers spaces, library of things check out, etc.)

      • Guide participants to some of the libraries LGBTQ+ books

      • Encourage participants to check out a book to continue learning

      • Coordinate with a librarian to plan a short presentation about the library’s resources.

      • Print a list of current LGBTQ+ books available at the library (sorted by categories like fiction, memoir, and history).
